Cyber Safe Deadline Approaching!

October 24, 2009

Norton Cyber Safety Challenge – Mt Erie can win up to $20,000!!!

Imagine the great things Mt Erie PTA could do with $20,000!

There are still three weeks left to work towards winning $20,000, $10,000 or $5,000 for our school by signing up for a FREE subscription to OnlineFamily.Norton.  Mt. Erie has registered to participate in the challenge but there hasn’t been too much activity from our families yet!   The contest is still WIDE open – the leading schools have about 40 families registered, so we definitely have plenty of time to surpass that number.   And, you have up until November 15th to sign up for the service!

To participate in the contest and get your free copy of OnlineFamily.Norton, follow these easy steps:

School Name:   Mt Erie Elementary

Promotion code:  PR-WA-24-3032

  • Follow the easy instructions to install the service on the computers your kids use
  • Login to check up on kids’ online activities, view reports showing search items and websites kids are using, set limits on kids’ computer time and monitor Facebook and MySpace activity, etc…

We are doing great work to help protect families and create better online experiences for all.  At its core, that is what this contest is all about – making the Internet a safer and more rewarding experience for the entire family.

At the Harvest night family night on October 29, we’ll have a computer set up to sign you up and get you going!

Volunteer Round-up

October 3, 2009

Thank you to all the parents who turned in your 2009 Volunteer Form! You should have received communication from the committee leaders you signed up to volunteer for. If you did not, please let our volunteer coordinator know. Haven’t turned it in yet or misplaced it? Never fear, it’s not too late. You can download the form at mteriepta.org under “How Can You Help”

Mt. Erie Fathers: WE WANT YOU! We’d like to start a Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) program at Mt. Erie. As a father, you’d commit to spending one day of the year at Mt. Erie volunteering on the playground, in the classrooms, in the halls, with security…wherever you are needed that day. If you are skilled at organizing (could be done from home) and would like to help start this great program, check out fathers.com/watchdogs and let our volunteer coordinator know you are interested!

The Ned Show Assembly is coming to Mt. Erie on Friday October 16th (what’s this? Check out thenedshow.com). We need volunteers to help sell yo-yo’s to the students during their lunch time on this day(~11:45-12:45). If you can help, let our volunteer coordinator know.

Is Your Family Cyber Safe?

October 3, 2009

In honor of National Cyber Security Month, Norton is offering parents a free subscription to OnlineFamily.Norton, a new service that helps parents monitor their kids’ online activities.

To encourage parents to get more involved with their kids online activities, Norton is offering a grand prize of $20,000 to the school with the largest number of parents to install and use OnlineFamily.Norton.  Second and third place prizes of $10,000 and $5,000 will be awarded to the schools with the highest percentage of parents participating relative to school size – so smaller schools, like ours, can compete and win too!   This is a great opportunity for our school.

Thanks for making the Internet a safer place for our kids and for helping our school!

MISSOULA CHILDREN’S THEATRE IS HERE!!!

October 1, 2009

AUDITIONS FOR Missoula Children’s Theatres RUMPELSTILTSKIN PRODUCTION ARE HERE!!!

Auditions for Rumpelstiltskin will be held on Monday, October 5th in the Mt. Erie gym after school from 3:45pm to 5:45pm. There are roles for students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Approximately 50-60 Mt. Erie students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Director. There is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play. Students wishing to audition must be in the gym at 3:45pm and stay for the entire two-hour session.

***For those students that have been cast in the play, their $20 non-refundable participation fee is due Monday after the audition. Checks can be made out to the Mt. Erie PTA.*** (Some scholarships are available, please see Mrs. Estensen).

This is a group audition – no advance preparation is necessary, but a SMILE  never hurts. Students should just be ready to come and have a good time! We suggest bringing an after school snack.

Rehearsals will be conducted every day. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. Tentatively, the first rehearsal for kids age 8-12 begins after the audition at 6:15pm, and for kids age 5-7, on Wednesday, October 7th. All rehearsals will be in the Mt. Erie gym. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role. Cast members scheduled for the full 4½ hours of rehearsal will be asked to bring a sack dinner.

The performances will be held on Friday, October 9th at 7pm and Saturday, October 10th, at 2:30pm (with a call time of 1:15pm) in the Mt. Erie gym. All those cast must be available for all scheduled performances. Each performance lasts one hour. Please call Ashley King (770-0485) with questions.

PLEASE PLAN TO BE THERE AFTER AUDITIONS AT 5:45PM, MONDAY, OCTOBER 13TH TO EITHER PICK UP YOUR CHILD IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN CAST, OR TO PAY FOR YOUR CHILD IF THEY HAVE BEEN CAST!

General PTA Meeting 09/16/09

September 17, 2009

MT. ERIE PTA
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009

CALL TO ORDER: The Mt. Erie General membership meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Suzy Gilbert. Sign in sheet is attached. A quorum was present. Introductions were made.

MINUTES: The minutes of the May 19, 2009 General PTA meeting were approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The proposed 2009-2010 PTA budget was presented. Suzy went over the budget line-by-line and gave a quick explanation of each item. A motion was made by Kristen Murphy that we approve the 2009-2010 budget as presented. The motion was seconded and approved.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Bob Knorr reported that the teacher’s rep will be Melinda Moore. Mr. Knorr thanked the PTA for all the help they provide to the teachers and the school.

Mr. Knorr discussed the school district goals of being school ready, transition ready and college ready . Regarding the transition ready goal, the 5th and 6th grades now have block schedules. The feedback has been very positive from the teachers, parents, and students. Because of this success, grades down through 3rd will now have some degree of this where the teachers will focus on a specific subject and will teach that subject to all children in that particular grade.

The district is cutting back on paper notices/mail that has been sent home in previous years. Much of this information will now be relayed electronically. School information can be found at asd103.org for the Mt. Erie website and mteriepta.org for the PTA website.

During the next few weeks, the students will be having fire drills, lockdown drills, and bus drills to help keep kids safe.

Mr. Knorr also discussed ways the district deals with information regarding sex offenders. Sex offender information is available on the Skagit County website and the school does work with the Anacortes Police Department and any relevant individuals to alert the school/families.
Teachers do talk to the students about “stranger danger”. Familywatchdog.com is a website that you can register with that will notify you each time a sex offender moves in/moves out of your specific area.

BOARD/COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Legislative – Rhonda McLaughlin spoke about Initiative 1033 which will decrease taxes but this in turn will have a negative impact on the schools. Colorado passed a similar initiative but called a special meeting to reverse because the school districts were going bankrupt. The Washington Education Association has already stated that they will be voting NO on this initiative. She stated that it is very important that we get the word out about the negative effects of this initiative.

Volunteer Coordinator – Silja Shjarback spoke about Mustang points. Parents earn points for volunteering and attending events at school while children can earn points by turning in the “WOW” cards they receive from staff. The cards can be turned in at the PTA office. Classrooms with the most points will be rewarded in November, February, and May. Kids need to put their name and class on the back to get points. If they would like to have these back they just need to write on the back “Please return.”

There is still a need for volunteers to help with Family Nights. If you would like to volunteer for this or any other committee, please contact Silja Shjarback at shjaresa@fidalgo.net.

Escrip/Membership – Kristen Murphy reported that you can sign up for escrip at www.escrip.com or give your Safeway number to Kristen and she will sign you up. Safeway donates a percentage back to the schools each month. Mt. Erie has averaged between $3,500 to $5,000 each year from Escrip.

97 people have signed up for PTA as of today. Membership forms went home in backpacks today. Goal is to get 100% of Mt. Erie staff signed up and would like to see 250 PTA members overall.

OLD BUSINESS:
Walking Path – Suzy spoke about getting a formal walking path put in behind Mt. Erie that the students can use daily. Some people have committed to helping with parts of the walking path but we are still working on getting commitments on all parts of the path construction. If anyone has any contacts in the construction field, please contact the PTA. It was suggested it would be helpful to see a plan of the proposed walking path so Mr. Knorr will make the plan available.

NEW BUSINESS:
Band Program – There is a new band director at the high school. One of his priorities is to reestablish the band program starting with the younger grades (beginning in 5th grade). The band program had an informational meeting in which 83 kids from the 5th, 6th,7th grades attended. Beginning band is every morning at the Anacortes Middle School from 7:30-8:20 and the bus will bring them to Mt. Erie each morning after practice. Practice will begin on Monday, September 21.

PARENT DISCUSSION:
• Encourage the teachers to use the money available to them through the PTA.
• Silja presented some information about getting dad’s more involved in the PTA. Information will be put on the website.
• Science Detectives – Parents are interested in volunteering for this but are concerned about volunteering for an entire week. Suzy said any commitment an individual can do is great whether it be one week, two weeks, or one month. The kids loved this program!

Suzy adjourned the meeting at 8:11.

Hollywood Calling…is the red carpet ready?

September 16, 2009

Can you roll out the red carpet for a couple of celebrity guests? We need one or two families to host our visiting Missoula Children’s Theater Directors while they are in town working with our kids. This is a great opportunity to get to know some really interesting people who have one of the coolest jobs around!

They will be here the week of October 5th and do require their own room.

If you would consider being a host family, please contact Ashely King at ashleydk@gmail.com
