Volunteer Opportunities – 11-20-2011

November 22, 2011

1. WINTER WONDERLAND DECORATING We have a fantastic opportunity for some creative people who love to show their festive spirit. The city of Anacortes has asked if we would like to participate in their “Winter Wonderland” at Washington Park. They are inviting the community to come walk through the campground and look at sparkling holiday lights as they drink hot chocolate and enjoy the festive spirit.

We are wondering if anyone would like to participate, either by helping, getting a group together, or heading up a group of interested parties to bring lights, garlands, or anything else to make a campsite festive. You can let your creative spirit flow!

Decorating is December 7-8 before 5 p.m.
Winter Wonderland is December 9-10 in the evening.

Please let me know if you would be interested in any way. We need to have paperwork in and a plan in place by December 5.

2. We need an additional person to help with nominating officers for NEXT year’s PTA. This position technically must be voted on by membership, nominating must be done by March 20. Let me know if you would be willing to do this, or have any questions.

Thank you everyone!

An Opportunity to Show Some Kindness and Compassion

November 3, 2011

The 6th Grade Kindness and Compassion Club is sponsoring Community Troop Support 2011 at Mt. Erie School. Mt. Erie students and family members can participate by donating items and letters for soldiers. The items must be dropped off in the boxes located in the lobby at Mt. Erie Elementary by November 10th. The care packages will be sent to the soldiers before the holidays. This is a great way to show kindness and compassion to our servicemen.

DONATION ITEMS include food, snacks, and dry goods (bars, crackers, cookies, etc…), candy, travel size drinks, instant coffee, drink powders, travel size toiletries, hygiene items (toilet paper, disposable razors, lotion, insect repellent, deodorant, etc…), batteries, duct tape, travel size games (cards, chess, checkers), correspondence items (paper, pens, cards).

For more information, call Stacey Estenson, Mt. Erie School Counselor at 293-9541 or go to: www.swcommunitytroopsupport.com

Mountain School Welcomes Mt. Erie 5th Graders!

September 13, 2011

Do your children wish that summer would never end? Mt. Erie fifth graders are in luck. They will have one more outdoor experience before the end of the year. All Mt. Erie fifth graders will have the opportunity to attend a three-day, two-night “Ecosystem Explorations Program” at the North Cascades Institute’s Mountain School. Mountain School takes place at NCI’s  Environmental Learning Center on the shores of Diablo Lake next to North Cascades National Park. Instructors from NCI also visit with the students before and after the Mountain School trip. The facilities at the Mountain School are well constructed, heated, “eco-lodge” type structures. More information about Mountain School can be found o n t h e i r w e b s i t e  www.ncascades.org. Select “Mountain School”, then select “4th to 6th Grade Ecosystem Explorations”. Since the Anacortes School District does not pay for this type of extra-curricular  activity, the PTA has spearheaded an effort to make this available to Mt. Erie 5th graders next year and in the years to come by offsetting a significant portion of the student cost as well as help conduct fundraisers to pay for remaining expenses. The fifth grade students, chaperones, and teachers will be heading off to Mountain School Nov 7-9, 2011. If you are interested in  helping out by chaperoning, fundraising, or equipping students, please contact Catherine Houck, Silja Shjarback, or your fifth grade teacher. Happy Trails!

Calling all parents, uncles, aunts, etc…

September 6, 2011

Volunteers are a vital part of enriching our children’s school experiences and assisting the teachers in educating our children. Children’s safety is equally important which is why the school district requires all volunteers to complete the district volunteer form (District Volunteer Form.pdf)and background check. If you think that you or a grandparent or an aunt, uncle, or someone you know may volunteer this school year, please complete the district volunteer form as soon as possible and turn it in. There will be increased tracking of this step to ensure our children’s safety.

You don’t need to be a PTA member to be a volunteer although it is highly encouraged.  If you would like to volunteer, fill out the PTA volunteer form (VolunteerForm 2011-2012.pdf) or contact Susan Butler, the Volunteer Coordinator, at sjb1992@gmail.com or 588-0872 for more info.

Volunteer openings this year include:

  • Assisting in the classroom
  • Shelving books in the library
  • Assisting with the book fair
  • Help in Science Class with dissections
  • Before school and after school activities
  • Helping with the fundraising auction and cruise
