January 20, 2012PTA General Membership Meeting moved to Tuesday January 31st 6:30 pm in the library; free childcare. Mr. Donaldson will give a special presentation about school assessments and the importance of data to guide instruction as well as the intervention and support programs at Mt. Erie. Also Laura Willingham, our garden liaison, will have updated information about the school garden volunteer opportunities as we gear up for getting the garden ready for it’s first spring planting and exciting opportunities for budding young gardeners.

January 12, 2012READING ROCKS
January 9, 2012The Mt Erie Winter Reading Program has started and this year we think READING ROCKS. Our winter reading program is designed to help our wonderful teachers assist the students in building a habit and love of reading that will last a lifetime. The program will last 6 weeks, running from January 9th through February 16th. The school has set a goal for Mt Erie students to read a total of 10,000 hours during the program and every student completing a Reading Card will be eligible to win some really great prizes. The more cards completed, the more chance of winning! At the end of the program, an assembly will be held to recognize all the reading accomplishments by the students.
Here is how our program works ~
o Set a time for reading each day
o Initial a square when the required reading time is met
o Reading continues until all blank squares have been initialed – this equals a “Completed Reading Card”
o Return the Completed Reading Card to their teacher
o Pull a new Reading Card located in the classes or on the bulletin board and begin again.
Please contact John at luccalily@comcast.net or 293-3117 if you need additional information.

2012 Young Authors Conference
March 26-30, 2012
Presented by NWESD and Skagit Valley College
Our Young Authors Conference is an annual celebration of young authors held every spring at Skagit Valley College. Professional authors and illustrators provide hands-on workshops for students as they arrive for a day of celebrating the art of writing and illustration. Students are stimulated and motivated in creative writing. The program encourages and supports teachers who help students develop their writing abilities, and offers an opportunity for students to have authors and illustrators as role models.
This year’s featured presenters are Laura McGee Kvasnosky on Monday through Thursday for students in grades 2-6, and Clete Barrett Smith on Friday for grades 6-8. Laura McGee Kvasnosky is the author of the very popular Zelda and Ivy series. She has 15 books to her name and several more in the works. Being both an author and illustrator gives her a unique perspective for our conference this year. Clete Barrett Smith hails from Bellingham. His first book for young adults, Aliens on Vacation, was chosen as a Disney book with a potential movie in its future. We are excited to have him present to our middle school students this year.
Fee: $25
