For every child K-3rd Grades

We would like to let you know about a wonderful literacy program in Anacortes: Fidalgo Island Reading Is Fundamental. RIF is the largest and oldest non-profit literacy organization in the country. Our local RIF group has been in operaion since 1996, providing free books to children two times during the school year. Last year we distributed close to 3000 books to over 920 children.

At each of the RIF distributions days this school year, children in the preschool through third grade will have the opportunity to choose a paperback book to bring home and keep. Volunteers will be on hand to read to your child a portion of his or her book. Parents are encouraged to participate and we invite you to be one of the readers on RIF day.

These books have been purchased with doinations from local service clubs, the PTA’s, the Friends of the Anacortes Public Library, and some generous individuals.

Reading aloud to your child is perhaps the single most important thing a parent can do to build young readers. We hope that you and your child will share the RIF books together at home.

RIF (Reading is Fundamental) , Monday April 11th

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is coming again to read to students at Mt. Erie Elementary.  Our final RIF event of the year is planned for Monday, April 11th just after Spring Break so please mark your calendars.  RIF is a highly successful and enjoyable program for Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third graders in our school district as well as many others around the Nation. At Mt. Erie Elementary, we have already given out over 425 books to students this year through this locally-sponsored program. Students will get another chance to bring home a book of their choice to keep.  The books have been purchased with donations from local service clubs, the PTA, and the Friends of the Anacortes Public Library. Reading aloud to your child is one of the most important things a parent can do to encourage young readers.  We hope you and your children will enjoy these books together.
